History of English Literature 4 is a survey course covering the period from the turn of the century until 1945. It aims at discussing English Literature in the context of both the dominant European cultural and artistic trends and of the critical idiom of the era. Though the lecture course focuses on Modernist Literature, it also touches upon such related issues as the critical views of leading Modernists and their place in critical history, the overview of the intellectual atmosphere and arts at the turn of the century, the Irish Renaissance and the Irish political situation and the influence of European Symbolism and Avant-garde on English Literature. The lecture course aims at outlining the development of all the major genres in the given period, it deals both with the works of outstanding poets (W. B. Yeats, T. S. Eliot, W. H. Auden) and playwrights (W. B. Yeats, G. M. Synge, S. O’Casey, G. B. Shaw), and with the oeuvre of the major novelists, such as Henry James, Joseph Conrad, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, E. M. Forster and D. H. Lawrence. The lecture course is accompanied by a follow-up seminar course.
