The course is designed to assist students in writing researched papers, primarily their thesis by familiarising them with the formal criteria and content requirements of related genres (dissertations, theses, journal articles, reviews, etc.). The course is intended to make students acquainted with the methodological and practical issues of academic research in a broader sense. The course covers the major steps of thesis writing (pre-writing: choice of the topic, consulting the supervisor, narrowing down the topic along methodological principles, choice of the adequate research method for the topic, coming up with a hypothesis, preparing a research plan, consulting sources including databases, note-taking, selection and organisation of notes, outlining; writing: the parts of a thesis, citation systems, quoting, paraphrasing, summarising, plagiarism, revision and proofreading). Apart from conveying theoretical information, the course is meant to be highly practical and thus involves doing exercises and the discussion of students’ actual problems related to their research in progress. In addition, the course also includes basic information on writing applications, CVs, lists of publications and their significance.
